What it tests

The Oxford Placement Test has two sections – Use of English and Listening.

The Use of English section assesses students' knowledge of grammatical form and vocabulary.

The listening section assesses students’ general listening ability.

Both sections test how well students understand the meaning of what is being communicated, which is an excellent indicator of general language ability.

Please note, as the test does not cover the full range of language skills, it is recommended that a language proficiency test, such as the Oxford Test of English, should be taken for evidence of overall proficiency.

British or American English

The test is available in British and American English in four different combinations: 100% British English, 100% American English or a mix. For total flexibility, you don’t have to choose the combination until you set up the test.

Test Format

Continually validated

The Oxford Placement Test was developed to take the worry out of placing your students. Piloted on thousands of learners across the globe, the test is continually validated to ensure it delivers results you can trust. To find out more, see The Oxford Placement Test: What does it measure and how? (PDF, 1.5MB) by Professor James Purpura.

Results are reported as a CEFR level and standardized score for the test as a whole, and separately for the Use of English and Listening sections, allowing you to make fine-grained distinctions between students’ abilities.

Test takers with Pre-A1 level results also get a ‘High’, ‘Mid’, and ‘Low’ sub-level, as shown in the table below. To make similar distinctions at A1 to C2 between test takers with results at the same CEFR level, teachers can use the standardized score.
