Britannia International Academy is proud to deliver the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy School Honours Programme for both primary and secondary students.

This nationally recognised educational programme helps young people explore leadership, citizenship, British values, public service, and the importance of making a positive difference within society. The programme encourages students to recognise the extraordinary contributions made by ordinary people across the United Kingdom and inspires them to become future changemakers within their own communities.

Developed by the Greater Manchester Lieutenancy, the programme aligns closely with curriculum areas including:

  • PSHE
  • British Values
  • Citizenship
  • Literacy & Oracy
  • Peer-led learning
  • Community engagement

An OFSTED inspector who observed the programme described it as:

“The most powerful act of British values" they had seen.

What Students Learn

Throughout the programme, students explore:

  • What national honours are
  • Why honours exist
  • How individuals contribute positively to society
  • Leadership and community responsibility
  • Courage, determination and service
  • The UK Honours System and Investiture ceremonies
  • How honours nominations are made
  • The impact ordinary people can have on society

Students also develop:

  • Public speaking skills
  • Reflection and discussion skills
  • Literacy and persuasive writing
  • Confidence and aspiration
  • Teamwork and peer collaboration

The programme highlights that leadership and contribution are not limited to famous people. Students learn that ordinary people can achieve extraordinary things through service, resilience and positive action.

Primary School Programme

The Primary School programme is designed primarily for Years 5–6 and introduces students to:

  • Heroes within communities
  • Values and citizenship
  • Respect and contribution
  • Positive role models
  • The importance of helping others

Interactive activities, discussions and reflection exercises help younger learners understand how people can make meaningful contributions to society and why these contributions deserve recognition.

The programme culminates in a special Honours Investiture Ceremony, celebrating student learning and participation.

Secondary School Programme

The Secondary School programme is designed primarily for Years 7–9 and includes:

  • Interactive assemblies
  • Structured lessons
  • Workbook activities
  • Peer discussions
  • Nomination-writing exercises
  • Presentation and speaking opportunities

Students explore how honours nominations are created, the qualities associated with leadership and service, and the impact individuals can make within their communities.

The programme encourages students to:

  • Think critically about leadership and contribution
  • Reflect on positive societal impact
  • Develop communication and persuasive writing skills
  • Build confidence in presenting ideas publicly

The final stage of the programme includes a presentation ceremony, where students present nominations and celebrate achievement and service.
