Our school assessment: Oxford international standardised assessments (OISA)

At Britannia International Academy, we understand the importance of clear, consistent, and meaningful assessment. We use Oxford International Standardised Assessments (OISA) to support fair evaluation of student progress, ensuring our judgements are benchmarked against rigorous international standards. This helps us objectively understand how well our students are learning at key stages, fostering their individual growth and academic success across our global community.

Why we use OISA

We believe assessment should support learning — not create pressure.

OISA allows us to:

  • Measure attainment objectively at key transition points

  • Compare outcomes against international benchmarks

  • Identify strengths and areas for development

  • Support curriculum planning and next steps

  • Ensure fairness and consistency across year groups

OISA complements teacher assessment and classroom evidence; it does not replace them.

What is OISA?

Oxford International Standardised Assessments are externally developed, digitally delivered assessments designed for international schools.

They are typically taken at:

  • End of Primary (Year 6 / ages 10–11)

  • Lower Secondary (Year 9 / ages 13–14)

Students may be assessed in:

  • English or English as a Second Language (ESL)

  • Mathematics

  • Science

How OISA supports Our Students

OISA assessments are designed to be age-appropriate, accessible, and supportive of student wellbeing.

They help us to:

  • Build a clear picture of each child’s learning

  • Track progress over time

  • Support smooth transitions between key stages

  • Plan targeted support or extension where needed

Students complete a familiarisation test before the assessment so they understand the digital format and feel confident on the day. This reduces anxiety and allows students to focus on the questions themselves.

What information do parents receive?

Assessment information is used carefully and professionally by the school.

Where appropriate, parents may receive:

  • A clear summary of their child’s attainment

  • Insight into strengths and areas for development

  • Contextual information rather than raw scores alone

We believe assessment information should be meaningful, constructive, and supportive of confidence

What is a standardized score?

Our approach to assessment

At Britannia International Academy, assessment is used to:

  • Support learning and progress

  • Inform teaching and planning

  • Encourage confidence and reflection

  • Help every student succeed

OISA is one part of how we ensure high standards while keeping students at the centre of everything we do.
